After months of anticipation, Canon has officially announced the EOS R6 Mark III, the third-generation model in its compact full-frame mirrorless lineup. The new version introduces a significant leap in resolution and performance, making it a more capable hybrid camera for both photographers and filmmakers.

Our Editor-in-Chief, David Schloss, has had some hands-on time with the R6 Mark III, and notes that the camera’s video capabilities are much improved from the previous generation. He also mentions that while the upgrades on the photography side may seem a bit more minor and tend to be overlooked compared to the new video-centric features. David also breaks down what has changed from the R6 Mark II to the Mark III and all the other new items found in the newer version.

A Major Leap in Resolution and Performance

At the heart of the EOS R6 Mark III is a new 32.5-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, similar to the one found in the recently launched Cinema EOS C50. This represents a 34% increase from the previous 24.2-megapixel sensor, promising improved dynamic range, detail, and low-light performance. With this bump, the R6 Mark III now rivals hybrid favorites like the Sony A7 IV in resolution and versatility.

The camera retains Canon’s DIGIC X processor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, offering 100% autofocus coverage and sensitivity down to –6.5 EV, ideal for low-light scenes. A new pre-continuous shooting mode, borrowed from Canon’s flagship R1 and R5 Mark II, allows photographers to capture moments even before fully pressing the shutter.

Improved Stabilization and Handling

Canon has also reworked the in-body image stabilization (IBIS), now capable of delivering up to 8.5 stops of compensation at the frame center or 7.5 stops at the periphery when paired with optically stabilized lenses. This makes handheld shooting smoother for both stills and video, especially in low-light conditions.

7K Open-Gate Video and Professional-Grade Features

Despite being positioned as a photo-centric camera, the R6 Mark III is a true hybrid system. It can record 7K 25p open-gate video, taking full advantage of the sensor’s width. Oversampled 4K 60p and 4K 30p from 7K capture are also supported, along with 7K 59.95 RAW Light and 4K 119.8 fps recording options.

Colorists and editors will appreciate support for Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3, ensuring wide dynamic range and flexible post-production workflows. The camera also includes a full-size HDMI port, a welcome improvement for external recording setups.

Faster Storage and Expanded Connectivity

For storage, the EOS R6 Mark III now includes dual CFexpress Type B card slots (up to 8 TB) alongside a UHS-II SD card slot. The move to CFexpress Type B ensures higher write speeds and reliability for demanding 7K and RAW video recording.

Pricing and Availability

The Canon EOS R6 Mark III is now available for pre-order at major retailers for $2,799 (body only). It will also come in two kits:

  • $3,149 with the RF 24–105mm f/4–7.1 IS STM
