Viltrox has officially launched the AF 85mm F/2 Evo for the Nikon Z mount, just two weeks after the lens debuted for Sony E. Priced at $275, this affordable portrait prime is now available for pre-order from major retailers.

The Nikon Z version carries over the same specs as the Sony E variant, which has already received strong reviews for its sharpness, fast autofocus, and compact design.

Compact, Lightweight, and Affordable

One of the key selling points of the Viltrox AF 85mm F/2 Evo is its small and lightweight build. Measuring 78mm in length and weighing only 360 grams, it’s significantly smaller than Nikon’s own Nikkor Z 85mm F/1.8 S, which measures 99mm and weighs 470 grams. The first-party lens also costs far more at $746.95 (after rebate).

The lens features 10 elements in 8 groups, including 2 ED and 2 HR elements to minimize chromatic and spherical aberrations. Early reviews of the Sony version note that it produces sharp images across the frame with smooth, pleasing bokeh, making it a compelling choice for portrait photographers.

Autofocus performance is handled by an STM motor, providing fast, quiet, and accurate focusing for both stills and video shooting. The build quality is solid despite the lens’s low price, featuring dust and moisture resistance, a customizable Fn button, de-click switch, aperture ring, and AF/MF switch.

The lens also includes a USB-C port for easy firmware updates, allowing Viltrox to improve performance and compatibility over time.

The AF 85mm F/2 Evo sits below Viltrox’s more premium portrait primes, including the AF 85mm F/1.4 Pro ($600) and the AF 85mm F/1.8 II ($329). The F/2 Evo provides a balance of affordability, portability, and performance, making it an excellent entry-level option for Nikon Z shooters.

Pricing and Availability

The Viltrox AF 85mm F/2 Evo is available now for $275 in Nikon Z and Sony E mounts through authorized retailers such as B&H. It’s also available directly from Viltrox’s official store, where a limited-time launch discount brings the price down to $261.25. The Nikon Z version is expected to start shipping next week.
