In 2016, Think Tank Photo released the Retrospective series of shoulder bags. These bags combined a lightweight design, retro styling and a wide range of carrying capacities. Over two years later, the company has revisited the popular series and upgraded it with increased gear security and an even lighter weight.

The new Retrospective V2.0 bags look similar to their predecessors and retain the soft, form-fitting design. However, they are lighter. The Think Tank Retrospective 5 V2.0, the smallest bag in the series, is 0.3 pounds lighter than its predecessor, for example. It may not seem like much, but every gram counts when you are carrying gear around for extended periods of time. The largest size, the Retrospective 30 V2.0, has added some interior space while still shedding 0.4 pounds, a carrying solution win-win.

Think Tank Photo Retrospective 5 V2.0

Each bag in the series now features a zippered opening under the main flap, to help keep your gear safer, and includes a dedicated interior tablet or laptop compartment and luggage handle pass-through. There is also a compressible water bottle pocket on even the smallest Retrospective shoulder bag. Further, the closure, which could be a bit loud on the original model even with the “sound silencer” design, has been further quieted.

In total, there are five sizes of Retrospective V2.0 shoulder bags: the 5, 7, 10, 20 and 30. The smallest bag, the 5, is designed to fit a standard DSLR or mirrorless camera with an attached wide-angle f/4 zoom lens, unattached 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom and a 9-inch tablet. The Retrospective 7 can hold a standard DSLR with an attached 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom plus an unattached 70-200mm f/2.8, flash, 10-inch tablet and 13-inch laptop. The 10 V2.0 can hold a gripped DSLR with a similar kit as the 7 V2.0. Looking at the larger two bags, the 20 and 30 V2.0, they can hold a gripped DSLR and two gripped DSLRs respectively. The 30 can also hold a 15-inch laptop due to its rectangular design, whereas the 20 V2.0 is more square than rectangular and can only hold a 12-inch laptop.

Think Tank Photo Retrospective 20 V2.0

As is par for the course with Think Tank Photo bags, the interior is customizable and features movable and protective interior dividers. The bags also feature organization pockets, a removable carrying handle, adjustable shoulder strap with cushioned non-slip pad and feature a water-repellant coating on their canvas exterior. For the full specifications and to order the new bags, click the links below. The bags all come in a sandstone color and pricing ranges from $150 for the Retrospective 5 V2.0 to $200 for the Retrospective 30 V2.0. Stay tuned to Imaging Resource for a full review of the Think Tank Retrospective 30 V2.0 bag in the coming weeks.

Think Tank Photo has launched a brand-new series of photo shoulder bags, the new StoryTeller series. The StoryTeller bags comprise a trio of bags, each sharing the same overall design and many features, but offering different carrying capacities. The bags feature a flip-top lid for quick access to your gear and utilize premium materials while still coming in at an affordable price point (more on that later).

Let’s start with the largest of the new StoryTeller shoulder bags, the StoryTeller 10. The big can hold an ungripped DSLR or mirrorless camera body along with two to four standard telephoto lenses, with hoods attached and reversed, and a 10-inch tablet. Think Tank offers an example kit of a Nikon D750 with an attached 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, 70-200mm f/2.8, 85mm f/1.8 and an iPad.

StoryTeller 10

The StoryTeller 8 is slightly smaller, holding the same cameras but three to four small telephotos or prime lenses and an 8-inch tablet. The StoryTeller 5 is, of course, even smaller. This holds an ungripped DSLR or mirrorless camera with two to four standard lenses and an iPad mini.

All three bags have an adjustable padded shoulder strap, a secure closure for main compartment, two memory card pockets, zippered pockets, expandable front pocket, stretchable side pocket for a water bottle and an included seam-sealed rain cover. Regarding weights, the StoryTeller 5 is 1 pound when empty, the 8 and 10 are 1.3 and 1.5 pounds respectively (0.5, 0.6 and 0.7 kilograms).

StoryTeller 5

The Think Tank Photo StoryTeller bags cost around $65, $70 and $85 respectively, making them very competitively priced. You can order them through the affiliate links below:

Alongside their new StoryTeller shoulder bags, Think Tank Photo has also released a new Modular Belt System V3.0. The modular belt system allows for quick access to your gear while being better-suited to the size of contemporary camera gear.

The belt system shifts the weight of your camera gear from your shoulders to your waists, allowing for better all-day comfort when out shooting. The new pouches are expandable to fit pro-sized lenses with hoods attached in the shooting position rather than being reversed. Further, there’s a new Camera Clip Adapter V3.0, which attaches to the Peak Design Capture Clip, Spider Light and SpiderPro camera clips.

Modular Belt System V3.0 and new lens pouches

The Modular Belt System V3.0 patented rotate or lock technology allows photographers to freely lock down pouches or rotate them while kneeling, sitting or running. The Lens Changers V3.0 features a one-hand drawstring closure which secures lenses and features a wide-mouth opening for one-handed access. In addition to new versions of the Lens Changer 15, 25, 35 and 50 pouches, there’s now a new Lens Changer 150, which holds a 150-600mm f/5-6.3 lens with a reversed hood.

There are also new modular essentials and accessories, which you can see here.

For photographers always on the move, flying with your gear can be a stressful experience. That’s where Think Tank Photo comes in with their new Airport Advantage Plus rolling camera bag. The roller has been designed to maximize the amount of gear you can carry while complying with international carry-on requirements and providing a high level of protection and security.

Despite having a roller design, retractable metal handle and protection for your gear, the Airport Advantage Plus weighs in at only 6.9 pounds (3.1 kilograms) to help you keep your carry-on under weight restrictions. It also has a dedicated padded 17″ laptop pocket. As far as gear capacity is concerned, the bag holds a gripped DSLR with an attached lens, an ungripped DSLR with an attached lens plus five to eight addditional lenses. Or it can hold a pair of gripped DSLRs with five to seven additional lenses. If you’re a mirrorless camera user, Think Tank says it can hold two bodies “with a crazy amount of lenses.” In terms of the largest lens you can fit inside the back, Think Tank states you can hold a detached 200-400mm lens with the lens hood reversed onto the barrel.

Think Tank Photo CEO and lead designer Doug Murdoch says of the Airport Advantage Plus, “Traveling photographers are finding it increasingly difficult to keep their most valuable and fragile gear-their bodies, lenses, and laptops-near them and safe from rough baggage handling. The new Airport Advantage Plus was designed with not only this in mind, but with the more restrictive size and weight requirements that go with international travel.”

Additional key features of the bag include a multi-use interior for cameras and clothes, a custom designed extra tall retractable handle with inset channel on aluminum tubing for durability, tripod mount pocket on the side, lockable zipper sliders, included travel pouch, user-replaceable parts including the handle and wheels, interior zippered pockets and included rain cover.

You can order the Think Tank Photo Airport Advantage Plus now for US$290.

For Gitzo’s biggest fans, their ongoing centennial is prime for new premium products. Earlier this summer, the esteemed company, which is owned by Manfrotto, released a pair of limited edition Traveler tripods. If you have one of the special edition tripods, or any other Gitzo tripod, then you might very well be interested in one of the new trio of Gitzo 100th Anniversary bags the company just announced.

The new Century Camera Bag Collection is comprised of the Century Traveler Backpack, Century Traveler Messenger and the Century Compact Messenger. All three bags are made using genuine Italian cow leather and use wear-resistant nylon. Further, the bags are water repellant and include carbon fiber-inspired styling reminiscent of the Gitzo Traveler tripod legs.

For backpack users, the Century Traveler Backpack has a roomy internal insert which can fit a medium-sized DSLR camera or a premium compact system camera with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens plus an additional pair of lenses. It can also carry a drone such as the DJI Mavic Pro with its remote control and accessories. The backpack offers dual side access and the front opening is designed to carrying a Traveler tripod (or any other similarly-sized tripod). The Gitzo Century Traveler backpack is available for preorder for $300 ahead of its September release.

The Century Traveler Messenger bag uses a G-lock flap closing system with a Fidlock enclosure. The bag can hold a mid-range DSLR or compact system camera with standard zoom lens plus another lens and a detached 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Further, the Century Traveler Messenger can hold a mirrorless camera with an attached telephoto zoom plus two or three additional lenses. The Messenger can also hold a DJI Mavic Pro-sized drone plus control and accessories. Like the backpack, it can hold and protect a Series 0 or 1 Traveler tripod. You can preorder the premium messenger bag for $200 ahead of its September release.

Rounding out the trio of Gitzo 100th Anniversary bags is the Century Compact Messenger bag. This smallest bag can hold a premium mirrorless camera with a standard zoom lens attached plus two additional lenses. Or it can hold a Mavic Pro-sized drone and smaller accessories. The Compact bag uses a G-Lock flap closing system similar to the Traveler Messenger bag. Like the other two bags, the Compact Messenger will be available in September. You can preorder it now for $170.

Think Tank Photo has announced a new series of shoulder bags, the Spectral series, which comprises a trio of carrying solutions. The series is launching with the Spectral 8, Spectral 10 and Spectral 15, all of which share the same styling and look, but come in varying sizes.

The bags feature one-handed gear access and improved protection against elements and would-be gear thieves. The bags have a sleek dark gray and black appearance and are designed to not attract unwanted attention. The bag can be opened using a magnetic Fidlock clasp which is both functional and quiet while locking automatically when the cover is placed back down. The bag also features a zippered enclosure for times when you want more protection than the top flap.

Looking at the smallest of the three new Spectral bags, the Spectral 8, it can hold a standard DSLR with a wide or short zoom lens, a detached 24-70mm style lens, an extra one or two small lenses plus an eight-inch tablet. If you are a mirrorless shooter, the Spectral 8 can hold a mirrorless kit with three to four lenses, including a longer zoom such as a 50-140mm optic.

The medium size Spectral 10, ups the capacity and can fit the same gear as the 8 plus a detached 70-200mm lens and another extra lens, plus it can fit a 10-inch tablet. The Spectral 15 fits yet another lens, a flash, a 10-inch tablet and a 15-inch laptop. Clearly for those who want a full photography solution on the go, the Spectral 15 is likely their best bet.

All three bags include a dedicated smartphone pocket, tripod attachment points and straps, high-quality materials, a luggage handle pass-through slot, padded non-slip shoulder strap design, customizable divider layouts, internal pockets for accessories, a water bottle pocket and a rain cover.

Think Tank Photo’s CEO and lead designer Doug Murdoch says of the new Spectral shoulder bags, ” For pro and serious amateur photographers who want to upgrade their camera bodies and lenses, selecting an appropriate shoulder bag is not a light decision. While they may be taking their first forays into professional-level glass, they also are monitoring their funds. We designed the Spectral series with them in mind. It integrates our history of innovation and dedication to sourcing the highest quality materials, while being sensitive to a photographer’s budget.”

Speaking of budget, what will these new bags cost? Think Tank Photo worked hard to keep the Spectral 8 under $100 and they achieved their target, as that bag costs just under $100. The Spectral 10 will retail for around $120 and the Spectral 15 sells for $140. All three bags are available for order now from Think Tank Photo.

Manfrotto has updated its Pro Light Bumblebee camera bag series with four new bags, including a pair of messenger bags and two backpacks. Let’s take a look at each of the new carrying solutions.

Manfrotto Pro Light Bumblebee M-10 and M-30 camera bags

The Manfrotto Pro Light Bumblebee M-10 camera bag is the smallest in the new quartet of bags. Its padded interior can hold a DSLR, 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, another pair of smaller lenses and a flash. It has a padded compartment for a 13-inch laptop as well. The top flap has a “noise-free” closure system. Around the exterior of the M-10 are numerous accessory pockets, elastic side straps for a small tripod, an AirSupport back and harness system, adjustable strap buckle and a wide top handle which doubles as a trolley strap.

The next size up, the Bumblebee M-30, shares many features with the M-10, including its comfort features and an included silver sun/rain cover, but it holds more gear. The M-30 can hold a DSLR with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, up to three additional lenses, a flash and a 15-inch laptop. You can preorder both bags below:

The Manfrotto Pro Light M-10 is on the left, the interior of the M-30 is on the right.

Manfrotto Pro Light Bumblebee 130 and 230 camera backpacks

Like with the messenger bags, there are two new backpacks. The 130 holds a DSLR with 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and up to an additional eight lenses. It can also hold a 15-inch laptop. The bag has dual side pockets, tripod storage, multiple exterior pockets, top and side strap handles, shoulder straps and a waist belt. It also includes a rain cover.

Manfrotto Pro Light Bumblebee-130

The larger 230 can hold a DSLR with a 70-200mm f/2.8 plus up to an additional 10 lenses, offering plenty of storage for most photography kits. For photographers with 17-inch laptops, the 230 can hold that as well. Both the 130 and 230 offer front and top access to the main storage compartment. Think Tank Photo releases new StreetWalker Rolling Photo Backpack and updates classic StreetWalker series backpacks

The new StreetWalker Rolling Backpack V2.0 features the new ability to quickly transform from a backpack to a roller. This versatility doesn’t come at the cost of space as the new Rolling Backpack V2.0 can hold two DSLR bodies with attached lenses, including a 200-400mm f/4 lens, and a 15-inch laptop.

The roller is designed with travelers in mind. The backpack has a harness system that allows you to carry it on your back or roll it and it is designed to maximize the amount of gear you can carry without going over standard airline carry-on restrictions. For those who want to roll reliably for a long time, the Roller V2.0 has a reinforced telescoping handle with rubberized touch points and custom-designed 80mm wheels with sealed ABEC grade 5 bearings. If something happens to your backpack, fret not, as the handle, wheels, wheel housings, feet and kick plate are all user-replaceable. For carrying your non-camera gear, there are two side water bottle pockets and a dedicated smartphone pocket designed to fit most modern phones.

Think Tank StreetWalker Rolling Backpack V2.0

It is not just the new backpack that’s been announced as Think Tank has also updated their three classic StreetWalker backpacks with the new StreetWalker V2.0, StreetWalker Pro V2.0 and StreetWalker HardDrive V2.0. (Note: I reviewed the original Think Tank HardDrive backpack in 2015 and loved the backpack. It became my go-to backpack and I have used it to carry gear on many of my photography adventures since then.) The three updated StreetWalker V2.0 backpacks vary in their size and features, but they do share many features. All three models are designed for all-day comfort and include high quality materials for extensive durability and protection. They all – and the Roller V2.0 as well – include movable padded dividers to customize the interior to your personal gear. For carrying heavy gear for extended periods of time, there is also a detachable waist belt. Like other Think Tank products, the StreetWalker V2.0 backpacks are compatible with Think Tank’s Camera Support Straps, Thin Skin belt and Pro Speed belt (sold separately).

Like the Roller V2.0, the new backpacks include a dedicated smartphone pocket and two side water bottle pockets as well. The front panel includes a tripod mount, although the Pro and HardDrive models do include a cup for carrying larger tripods. Let’s take a closer look at the differences in capacity between the three updated StreetWalker V2.0 backpack models. The standard StreetWalker V2.0 backpack weighs 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms) and has internal dimensions of 9.4 x 16.1 x 6.3 inches (24 x 41 x 16 centimeters) (width x height x depth). The StreetWalker Pro V2.0 weighs 3.5 pounds (1.6 kilograms) and has internal dimensions of 9.4 x 17.3 x 7.5 inches (24 x 44 x 19 centimeters). Finally, the StreetWalker HardDrive V2.0 weighs 4.5 pounds (2 kilograms) and has internal dimensions of 11 x 19.7 x 7.1 inches (28 x 50 x 18 centimeters).

Of the new StreetWalker V2.0 backpacks, Think Tank Photo CEO and lead designer Doug Murdoch said the following, “With the release of the new StreetWalker Rolling Backpack and the new versions of the three classic StreetWalker backpacks, we made three of the best pro-level backpacks in the photo industry even better. The one thing we’ve heard over and over since they first launched is how comfortable and durable they are. Now, with the hybrid rolling backpack and the upgraded core backpacks, we’ve integrated even more photographer feedback to expand their functionality.”

Think Tank introduces version 2.0 of their TurnStyle sling camera bags

While the StreetWalker series backpacks are large and designed for carrying a lot of gear comfortably, the TurnStyle sling camera bags are designed for more casual shooting and offer a lighter, smaller and more streamlined design. To make the TurnStyle V2.0 more comfortable, it includes a new stabilizer strap that holds the bag steady while shooting but can also be tucked away when it isn’t needed. The sling design lends itself to quickly accessing gear while on the go.

Think Tank TurnStyle 20 V2.0

There are three TurnStyle V2.0 bags, all using the same design but offering different carrying capacities. The TurnStyle 5 is aimed at mirrorless camera users and it can hold a mirrorless body and two to four lenses, plus an eight-inch tablet. The TurnStyle 10 holds a standard DSLR with a lens or two and an eight-inch tablet. Finally, the largest TurnStyle V2.0 bag, the TurnStyle 20, holds a standard size DSLR with one to three lenses and a 10-inch tablet. All three sizes are available in charcoal and a new indigo blue colorway.

Murdoch says of the TurnStyle V2.0 bags, “The new version of our popular TurnStyle sling bags reinforces their reputation as the ideal ‘grab and go’ camera bag. One thing we’ve learned from serving professional photographers for so long is that they always need one, pre-conformed gear kit that gives them access to their core gear. The TurnStyle is that bag.

The TurnStyle V2.0 sling bags come in a new indigo blue color option.

The slim, contoured bag conforms to your body and is constructed using lightweight, breathable materials. It has a front organizer pocket for things like batteries, memory cards and other small accessories. For your camera gear, the interior has customizable dividers. If you get caught out in the rain, no problem, the bag comes with a seam-sealed rain cover as well, plus the bag is coated with water repellant.

In early December, I wrote about COSYSPEED’s new camera bag, the Streetomatic +. It is compact, but larger than its predecessor, capable of holding a DSLR camera rather than the mirrorless camera the the original Streetomatic was designed to carry. What makes this bag particularly interesting is how it is made to be used with a single hand.

The primary feature of the Streetomatic+ is its magnetic Fidlock closure. Fidlock is a German company – as is COSYSPEED – who worked with COSYSPEED to design the closure. It is a clever design that works well with only a single hand while remaining securely fastened when the bag is closed. To open the bag, you slide the metal button on the front to the right and then flip open the bag. When you want to close it again, you press down near the lock and the magnets do the rest, ensuring that the closure clicks back into place. If you want to make sure that the bag stays shut, there’s an elastic band sewn on the bag with a faux-leather loop that you can place around the closure.

Speaking of faux-leather, you can see a lot of it on the Streetomatic +. The team at COSYSPEED didn’t want to harm any animals to achieve the classy look for their bag, so they utilized PU veggie leather. The gray material is 600D nylon and it feels very robust. The entire bag is well-made, the stitching is nice and the attached belt feels very strong and appears built to last.

The Streetomatic + can be worn in two ways, as a cross-body bag or attached to the hip. I found that it worked best when it was strapped around the waist as it much more secure than when used as a cross-body bag, which makes the closure operate better and leave the bag more easily accessible. This is because there is extended fabric above the bag that is designed to let the bag sit comfortably on your hip, which it does, but it tends to fold down over the top of the bag when it is worn over the shoulder.

The bag is very comfortable to wear around the waist, even when it is full. The belt is wide and it has Velcro to help keep it properly sized to you. It comes with a belt extension if needed. I am not particularly thin, but I did have to use the belt such that I had to run it with its Velcro section through the loop, which can be a bit difficult, but there’s plenty of space. There is a lot of extra belt, but the bag has a loop you can slide around the excess belt to keep it from hanging. One of the few things about the bag that needs two hands to use is the belt closure. There’s a safety switch in the middle that you need to press to open/close the clicking closure. I like this feature because it means you won’t accidentally detach the bag while it is in use.

The Sony A99 II with Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 lens is a tight fit.

Inside the bag, there is enough space for a DSLR with an attached lens. However, you certainly won’t fit a gripped DSLR in this bag, nor will you comfortably fit a large DSLR in the bag. I was barely able to squeeze a Sony A99 II and attached Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 lens into the Streetomatic +, but it is possible. I also tried a Nikon D500 with a Nikon 20mm f/1.8 lens, which did fit, and a Nikon D800E with the same lens attached, that did not. Ultimately, a compact DSLR should fit comfortably in the Streetomatic +, but any large DSLRs will likely be a tight squeeze. A mirrorless camera, even a larger one like a Sony A7R II, should fit very nicely.

The bag also includes a variety of pockets. There are two exterior pockets on either end of the bag. There is a zippered pocket which has a mesh pocket inside of it, perfect for holding keys and small accessories. The other pocket closes with Velcro and can fit your smartphone. It can hold my iPhone 7 Plus, but anything larger could pose a problem. There are two mesh pockets on the inside of the bag’s main compartment as well, ideal for storing an extra battery and memory cards. The bag comes with four padded dividers to use inside the bag, but I don’t think they’ll be necessary for most camera systems except small mirrorless ones as there isn’t enough room to carry extra lenses if you’re using a DSLR.

Overall, the COSYSPEED Streetomatic + is a very nice bag if you don’t need to carry large DSLRs or lenses. It’s well-suited for a stroll around town and proved to be comfortable during extended use, even when completely full. The Streetomatic +’s magnetic closure works very well in practice and is an excellent feature. To be able to use a bag completely one handed is very useful.

You can order your COSYSPEED Streetomatic + from B&H for around US$130.
