Think Tank Photo/Mindshift Gear has announced a new BackLight backpack, offering the largest capacity in the BackLight series. The new BackLight Elite 45L backpack offers an eponymous 45 liters of internal volume, allowing for ample carrying capacity for your cameras, lenses, laptops and other gear. There are also external attachment points, well-suited to the adventuring photographer, which allow you to store gear such as static rope, axes, snowboards/skis and tripod.

The backpack is constructed using weather-resistant materials and zippers, allowing you to safely carry your gear in extreme conditions. The BackLight Elite 45L features YKK AquaGuard zippers and waterproof/tearproof sailcloth, extensive lumbar padding and a ventilated quick-dry back panel. Like other BackLight backpacks, the bag offers rear-panel access, which provides security.

Think Tank CEO and Lead Designer Doug Murdoch says of the new backpack, “We paid special attention to the needs of backcountry photographers while designing the Elite 45L. In design, fit, protection, and durability, the BackLight Elite 45L stands up to the demands of outdoor photo expeditions like no other bag we have ever released.”

Given its large volume, you can expect to comfortably fit a large gripped DSLR with an attached 70-200mm telephoto zoom lens plus a flash, a couple of fast zoom lenses and an additional few prime lenses. There are also dedicated compartments for a 17-inch laptop and 10-inch tablet, plus 17 liters of front pocket carrying capacity, a pair of large water bottles and much more.

You can order the new MindShift Gear BackLight Elite 45L backpack from Think Tank Photo for $399 by clicking here.

Continuing their popular BackLight series of photo backpacks, MindShift Gear has announced the release of a new 18-liter version of the BackLight rear-panel backpack.

The BackLight backpack has been designed such that photographers can spin it around to their front and access the main compartment of the bag without ever having to take the pack off. Further, this design adds security as the main compartment is against your back when wearing the backpack normally.

The new 18-liter version also features a dedicated compartment which can fit a 13-inch laptop and a full-size tablet. It has front pockets with a total of five liters of storage for personal items, making it well-suited for a day trip. In the main compartment, you can fit a variety of camera kits, including a pair of gripped DSLR cameras with lenses attached plus one to three standard zoom lenses or two gripped mirrorless bodies with lenses attached and three to five additional lenses. The maximum lens size the bag is designed to carry is a 300mm f/2.8 or a 150-600mm lens attached to a body.

Of the new BackLight 18L, MindShift CEO and designed Doug Murdoch says, “The BackLight 18L was designed with comfort in mind. The air channel on the rear panel was designed for maximum comfort. It features a large padded waist belt to support heavy gear and a contoured back panel for extra lumbar support.” The backpack includes a flap-keeper neck strap, tripod/monopod mounting system on the front or side, water bottle pockets on each side, side compression straps, ergonomic zipper pulls, adjustable dividers, included seam-sealed rain cover and more.

The backpack is available in two colors, charcoal and woodland green, and is available for order now for US$200.

From now through December 31, or while supplies last, Leica fans will be able to purchase a special edition Peak Design for Leica Backpack. There is a “very limited” quantity of this new backpack and it will be available exclusively in Leica Stores and Boutiques.

The backpack comes with a Cuff and Leash from Peak Design as well. It pays homage to the historic Leica brand with signature red stitching and the classic Leica red dot. The collaboration offers “an ideal, complementary accessory for Leica enthusiasts.”

If there’s one thing you can say for sure about Leica fans, it’s that they’re hardcore, so it won’t be surprising if they snatch up the $299 Peak Design backpack in short order. If you’d like one of your own, you can order it here.

Last fall, I reviewed Brevitē’s Rolltop backpack and came away very impressed by the backpack’s aesthetics and versatility. The company is back with not one, but three new bags as part of the new Hadley Series, which is now on Kickstarter.

We covered the Hadley Series when the campaign was announced, but Brevitē sent me a pre-production version of The Roamer backpack to try out ahead of its release. There are some minor variations between the backpack I received and the final production version.

The stylish bag is definitely impressive. It is very lightweight, just over a pound without the insert and below 2.5 pounds with the insert. Speaking of the insert, the final version will have a Fidlock magnetic lock to keep it in place, whereas my pre-production unit does not. With that said, the removable insert is great. You won’t be able to store large cameras and lenses within the insert, but a small DSLR and a few normal lenses or basically a complete mirrorless or Micro Four Thirds system will fit very nicely.

One of my favorite aspects of the Hadley Roamer, and the Hadley Series as a whole, is the nice style. While ultimately function trumps form, it’s a bonus when a backpack is able to look good and do its job. On the topic of functionality, the pre-production unit I have has fine zippers, but the final model will include YKK zippers.

The camera insert itself has been revised. The first photo below shows the unit I have here and the second comes directly from Brevitē and shows off the revised final design, which not only looks better but offers a front organizing pocket. Further, the revised camera insert has a pair of anchor points to help keep it secure inside the Roamer (or any of the Hadley series bags as the insert is interchangeable).

The pre-production insert

The revised and improved insert which will come with the production versions of the Hadley series

The Brevitē Hadley Roamer has a magnetic Fidlock enclosure system which works very well and allows for one-handed operation. The shoulder straps, while very lightweight, are padded and quite comfortable. On the back of the padded backpack, there is also a rear compartment access allowing you into the main compartment through the back in addition to the traditional top access. At the bottom of the bag are a pair of anchor points, which work well with a small tripod but a larger tripod could be tricky. Along each side are elastic water bottle holders.

Overall, the Brevitē Hadley Roamer is a good backpack. It is stylish and functional and the camera insert design works well. The Roamer may not be able to store as much camera gear as some other similarly-sized camera backpacks, but it is a nice blend of form and function and is a versatile backpack.

The Kickstarter campaign for the Hadley series has just recently been funded. There is still time to get in on the campaign and get the best deals on the new bags before they start shipping this coming February.

Brevitē has been making photographer-focused backpacks for the last few years. In fact, we reviewed one of them last year. That backpack was a particularly nice backpack because it was comfortable and functional when carrying photography equipment, but also worked very well as an everyday carrying solution and had very a nice style. Brevitē has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to launch a new series of backpacks, the Hadley line, which adopts a minimalist style while maintaining the same photographer-friendliness of Brevitē’s existing products.

The Hadley series is comprised of a trio of backpacks, all of which share the same overall styling and a handful of features, including Brevitē’s new signature insert, which can be used across its line of backpacks or act as a standalone grab-and-go pouch for protecting your photography gear. The new insert has been redesigned such that it can now be carried as a cross-body bag by attaching the new magnetic buckle camera strap. All the bags also have Brevitē’s comfortable padded strap system and a moisture wicking back panel alongside weather-sealed zippers. Let’s take a look at each of the new daypacks in the Hadley series.

Hadley Roamer

We start with the largest bag in the new Hadley line, the Roamer. The Roamer is a lightweight bag with a carrying capacity of 17 liters but with its drawstring top, its volume can expand to 20 liters. The Roamer has a magnetic Fidlock closure on the top flap, which Brevitē says makes accessing the main compartment very easy. There’s a large front compartment which runs the entire length of the Roamer and the backpack includes smaller pockets as well. The bag includes numerous exterior attachment points and bottom dual utility buckles, which are perfect for carrying your tripod. There are compression straps and mesh pockets on both sides of the bag, ideal for carrying water bottles.

Hadley Roamer

Hadley Runner

The Hadley Runner is a slimmer and sleeker option than the Roamer while still offering 16 liters of capacity. The Runner has a “no-seam construction,” which lends itself to a less rigid appearance. The 16-liter main compartment is joined by a pair of large exterior pockets.

Hadley Runner

Hadley Scout

The final backpack in the new Hadley series is the Scout. It’s a basic design relative to the other two backpacks and has different functionality to match. The Scout has a vertically-oriented zippered compartment on top and a second lower pocket with magnetic closures. The top-load access includes a tote-style carrying handle which is made from material similar to a seat belt, allowing the Scout to go from shoulder bag to tote bag. The main compartment has 16 liters of space and a hidden interior pocket for storing important items such as keys and identification.

Hadley Scout

Availability

The Hadley series can be purchased on Kickstarter for as little as US$150 per bag, which is a savings of $70 off their eventual MSRP when they start shipping in February 2018.

Of the new Hadley series, Brevitē lead designer Brandon Kim (who is one of the three brothers who cofounded the company) says, “With the Hadley series, we wanted to simplify the functionality down to its core features to deliver a streamlined experience that was led by people’s needs, not just creating a bag with a million functions. We’ve seen dozens of bags entering the market loaded with bells and whistles, without offering the true functionality everybody needs; so we focused on a simple, intuitive and stylish design that hits the core needs of the users.”

For Gitzo’s biggest fans, their ongoing centennial is prime for new premium products. Earlier this summer, the esteemed company, which is owned by Manfrotto, released a pair of limited edition Traveler tripods. If you have one of the special edition tripods, or any other Gitzo tripod, then you might very well be interested in one of the new trio of Gitzo 100th Anniversary bags the company just announced.

The new Century Camera Bag Collection is comprised of the Century Traveler Backpack, Century Traveler Messenger and the Century Compact Messenger. All three bags are made using genuine Italian cow leather and use wear-resistant nylon. Further, the bags are water repellant and include carbon fiber-inspired styling reminiscent of the Gitzo Traveler tripod legs.

For backpack users, the Century Traveler Backpack has a roomy internal insert which can fit a medium-sized DSLR camera or a premium compact system camera with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens plus an additional pair of lenses. It can also carry a drone such as the DJI Mavic Pro with its remote control and accessories. The backpack offers dual side access and the front opening is designed to carrying a Traveler tripod (or any other similarly-sized tripod). The Gitzo Century Traveler backpack is available for preorder for $300 ahead of its September release.

The Century Traveler Messenger bag uses a G-lock flap closing system with a Fidlock enclosure. The bag can hold a mid-range DSLR or compact system camera with standard zoom lens plus another lens and a detached 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Further, the Century Traveler Messenger can hold a mirrorless camera with an attached telephoto zoom plus two or three additional lenses. The Messenger can also hold a DJI Mavic Pro-sized drone plus control and accessories. Like the backpack, it can hold and protect a Series 0 or 1 Traveler tripod. You can preorder the premium messenger bag for $200 ahead of its September release.

Rounding out the trio of Gitzo 100th Anniversary bags is the Century Compact Messenger bag. This smallest bag can hold a premium mirrorless camera with a standard zoom lens attached plus two additional lenses. Or it can hold a Mavic Pro-sized drone and smaller accessories. The Compact bag uses a G-Lock flap closing system similar to the Traveler Messenger bag. Like the other two bags, the Compact Messenger will be available in September. You can preorder it now for $170.

Miggo has returned to crowdfunding to launch a new collection of three “storm-proof” camera and drone bags, the Agua IPX3 bags, which are now available to back on Indiegogo. The trio consists of an Agua Versa backpack, Agua Drone Lander and Agua Sling.

The Versa backpack is a versatile backpack designed for not only daily use, but for carrying professional gear. You can store gear inside an included removable internal “doc-bag” or in the main compartment of the bag itself. The backpack offers fast side access to your gear and includes three dedicated waterproof exterior pockets for your personal belongings in addition to designed laptop and tablet pockets. The backpack is made using a durable tarpaulin material and offers a rigid bottom with impact protection. The Versa is designed for a full-frame camera in addition to a pair of pro lenses and a flash.

I have a pre-release sample of the Versa on hand for testing and I was able to fit a gripped DSLR with a 200-500mm zoom lens with room to spare. Granted, this was after removing the interior bag, but the backpack itself offers great protection. I tested its “storm-proof” claim and it stood up very well to extensive exposure to water, not letting a single drop inside any of its pockets or the main compartment. The bag is also very comfortable to wear. I’ll have a full review of the backpack soon.

Agua Versa backpack

The Agua Drone Lander bag is designed for DJI Mavic or Spark-sized drones and offers the same weather protection as the other two bags in the series. It has a padded three-layer insert and space for the drone plus accessories. It also includes an integral landing mat, which can double as a work station. The Drone Lander is carried like a sling and has a padded main strap and a diagonal strap for keeping the bag snugly against your body on long treks.

Rounding out the lineup is the Agua Sling, which is a compact design. Despite its small size, it can hold a camera as large as a Canon 5D Mark IV with three professional lenses and a flash. It has a wide padded strap and offers side access.

Australian bag maker Alpaka has announced a new backpack, the Shift Pack, which has launched on Kickstarter, the company’s second Kickstarter campaign.

For a lot of photographers, a dedicated photo backpack is perhaps overkill or they just want something more versatile. There has been a move in recent years toward technology-friendly and more general carrying solutions. That’s where Alpaka’s new Shift Pack comes in. This rolltop backpack is aimed at frequent travelers and commuters who need to safely and comfortably carry a lot of tech and everyday items.

The Shift Pack is weather resistant, has a magnetic locking system, expandable storage, quick access pockets, modularity, a luggage sleeve, a rear compartment for your laptop and/or tablet, a flat bottom multi-use compartment and much more. You can access the bag’s spacious main compartment through the top, back and bottom. The bottom interior compartment, which can fit a DSLR camera and a couple of small lenses (or a DJI Mavic Drone and controller) is padded and has lockable zippers for extra security.

The Kickstarter campaign has over a month remaining and at the time of writing is more than halfway to its goal. Early bird backers can get the Shift Pack for $159, a savings of $70 off of the eventual retail price. The Shift Pack – which will be available in blue, gray and black colorways – will start being delivered to backers in February. Click here for more information.
