Moment has released Pro Camera II, a fully redesigned version of its popular third-party camera app for iPhone. The new app is built to unlock more of the iPhone’s imaging capabilities through advanced manual controls, pro-video features, and a customizable interface aimed at photographers and filmmakers.

The original Pro Camera app was widely regarded as one of the best alternatives to Apple’s native camera app, even reaching the #1 rated camera app spot for several years. But it had begun to show its age with slower startup times and occasional crashes. Pro Camera II aims to fix that with a faster, more stable foundation and an overhauled user experience.

Rebuilt for Performance and Creative Control

Pro Camera II introduces a streamlined, configurable interface and expands access to manual photography tools. Users can shoot in Shutter Priority, ISO Priority, Manual, or Auto exposure modes, including the ability to define a custom Auto ISO range for more consistent exposures.

White balance controls have also been upgraded. Photographers can adjust temperature and tint, choose presets, or calibrate using a gray card. The app even allows fine-tuning of image processing and HDR intensity for more precise results.

Professional Video Tools on the iPhone

Moment has packed the new version with a robust set of video features normally found in dedicated cinema apps. Pro Camera II supports Apple Log, Open Gate, ProRes, and 10-bit recording. Users can configure resolution, frame rate, codec, color space, bitrate, and chroma subsampling.

Video monitoring tools include Waveform, RGB Histogram, and audio metering—important additions for shooters who need accurate exposure and color control.

LUT support is also built in. LUTs can be imported, applied to photo and video, and toggled between preview mode or baked-in output with adjustable intensity.

Customizable Interface and Workflow

Pro Camera II’s interface can be tailored to the user’s shooting style. A left-hand layout option and customizable quick-access tools make it easier to reach frequently used settings such as flash, stabilization, zebras, grids, and focus peaking. Zen Mode simplifies the interface for distraction-free shooting, removing everything except essential tools.

The updated app integrates seamlessly with Moment’s iPhone lens and case ecosystem. Moment says future updates will add slow shutter and timelapse modes, advanced profile sharing, and expanded support for third-party hardware.

Pricing and Availability

Moment’s Pro Camera II app is available now on the Apple App Store for $9.99.

Sony has announced the newest version of its Visual Story mobile application, bringing the software to version 2.0, adding compatibility with video content and more.

The mobile app is designed for professional event photographers, allowing them to deliver content to clients immediately following an event. Visual Story includes gallery creation tools, artificial intelligence (AI) assistance to select the best images from a set easily, and web delivery. With the latest update, photographers can now deliver video content in addition to still images. Sony writes, ‘Visual Story is the perfect tool to deliver an excellent experience for all types of clients and use cases that require immediate delivery, including weddings, corporate events, school activities, sports, and family gatherings.’

Within Visual Story 2.0, users can transfer video files from Sony A7S III, A1 and FX3 cameras to the app, where the video files can easily be trimmed and then uploaded. Even during the event, people can view an expanding gallery in real-time. Of course, after the event, a client can view the gallery, too.

There’s more to version 2.0 than video compatibility. The new version now lets users select and import photos via an SD card reader and USB mass storage connection if the network connection at the event is not strong enough. Photographers can connect directly to an Apple SD card reader, allowing for quick and easy image selection and import to the Visual Story app.

Another connectivity improvement is automatic reconnection if the connection between your smartphone and camera is temporarily lost. Further, the number of setting options that users can copy from the smartphone to the camera via Bluetooth has been expanded.

Taking into consideration user feedback, Sony has made additional improvements, including optimized import destination settings, reducing the required steps to create a Story Gallery, displaying an original file name in a Story Gallery, supporting individual photo and video downloads in a Story Gallery, increasing Live Gallery expiration time for up to 24 hours, and adding background color options to a Story Gallery.

Of course, Visual Story 2.0 includes many of the same features as the app’s original release. Visual Story allows photographers to automatically apply their own edit presets or fixed presets, reducing the time required to edit images on the fly. Visual Story includes numerous basic editing functions, including exposure, white balance, contrast, and H/S/L adjustments.

To make final processing and delivery easier, ratings and selections made when creating a gallery within Visual Story can be downloaded to your computer as an XMP file. Photographers can also embed a logo, social media information and more directly onto their images within the gallery, allowing for easier branding and marketing at an event. You can view an overview video of the original Visual Story release below.

Sony Visual Story version 2.0 is available to download now for free from the Apple App Store. Visual Story is compatible with select Sony cameras, including the A7C, A7 III, A7R IV, A7S III, A9, A9 II, A1 and FX3. Cameras from other manufacturers may also be compatible if they support the FTP transfer function.

While Visual Story is free to download and use, additional options are available for paid subscribers. There are Free, Basic ($20/month) and Power ($50/month) tiers available, all of which are free for the first month. The paid tiers include additional cloud storage, more maximum projects, additional gallery deliveries, additional gallery images and videos and more Live Gallery creation options. Canon has announced its first-ever photo culling app. The application utilizes Canon’s computer-vision artificial intelligence engine, which is also making its public debut. Canon wants the app, aptly named Photo Culling, to help users deal with the huge amounts of images many photographers capture and keep on their smartphones.

According to a recent Keypoint Intelligence report, 1.4 trillion images were captured worldwide in 2020, and 7.4 trillion images were stored. That’s a lot of photos! For some photographers, it can be overwhelming to deal with hundreds or even thousands of images. Canon’s new Photo Culling app delivers ‘expert photo advice’ to help people figure out which images are worth saving. The app uses Canon’s Computer Vision Artificial Intelligence Engine, known as PHIL (abbreviated for Photography Intelligence Learning), to evaluate images based on four criteria: sharpness, noise, emotions and closed eyes. Images are scored and ranked based on these criteria, and the app also helps identify duplicate images.

‘PHIL is Canon U.S.A.’s unique computer vision AI engine. PHIL is used to detect the photo score using AI technology to show the quality of your photos. PHIL has several models to score photos, with five of those models being used in the Photo Culling app; grouping with similar photos, sharpness, noise, emotion and closed eyes. Powered by PHIL, Photo Culling finds your best photos, allows you to get individual photo scores and set your threshold level. With our AI Technology, you can quickly and easily cull through a high volume of photos to find the best.’ Caption credit: Canon

‘In today’s ever-changing and overwhelming world, where thousands of photos are captured and stored in a person’s smartphone, consumers need an expert, reliable and intuitive photo tool to help them decide the best photos based on years of trusted knowledge and technology,’ said Tatsuro ‘Tony’ Kano, executive vice president and general manager of the Imaging Technologies & Communications Group of Canon U.S.A., Inc. ‘Canon U.S.A.’s new Photo Culling App is the answer and we are proud to see how the company’s Computer Vision technology within this app can assist consumers with finding and keeping their best photos of their fondest moments.’

In terms of culling options, the app includes a pair of options: whole culling and similar culling. Whole culling determines the best images based on absolute scores against the four models of sharpness, noise, emotion and closed eyes. The user can set a threshold score, and any images that don’t meet that threshold will be recommended for deletion. Similar culling determines the best score among a similar group of photos. The first- and second-highest scoring images are noted, and the rest are recommended to be deleted. The app can automatically group similar images, and the user won’t need to group them manually.

Beyond culling features, the Photo Culling app includes photo counts and storage on the app’s home screen, creates dynamic event albums based on events and dates and includes dark and light mode settings.

Canon’s Photo Culling app will be available in two subscription options. You can either pay $2.99 per month or $14.99 per year, which is a savings of over $20 compared to subscribing monthly for a year. The app is also available with a three-day trial. For additional information, visit Canon. To download the app, click here. As of now, the app is only available for iOS. The app only works with .JPG images or photos captured with your phone’s native camera, as well, which may be a limitation for some photographers.

Adobe has updated Lightroom Mobile for both iOS and Android. The updates have differing new features, so let’s look at them each separately.

On the iOS front, Lightroom Mobile has a new selective brush, which is one of the most requested new features. When using an iPhone that supports 3D Touch, you can vary the effect of the brush by pressing with different levels of pressure. The same is true when working with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. There is also a new ability to selectively erase linear and radial gradients, improving their usability during selective edits.

The iOS version of Lightroom Mobile has a new selective brush

Further additions include a “Details” tab, which provides global control over sharpening and noise reduction. There’s an improved iPad interface for LR Mobile, which is designed to offer a more desktop-like appearance and functionality while still taking advantage of the large touch-based interface of an iPad. You can download the latest version of Lightroom for iOS here.

There is also a new “Details” tab for control over global adjustments like sharpness and noise reduction.

Android users have a big update to enjoy as well. The entire experience has been redesigned from the ground up to be faster and more familiar for Android users. The interface in particular has been redesigned. You can check out the new look in the screenshots below. You can download the latest version of Lightroom for Android here.

Lightroom Mobile for Android has been redesigned.

Adobe states that the interface is now more typical of the Android operating system and is faster and more efficient.

After a year of development, the Android and iOS app Mendr launched in March. Mendr is a very interesting app that matches photographers with retouchers. A user selects one of their photos within the application, chooses the edits that they want done to the image and then sends it out. Photo editors with the app are then notified of the edit request. Ideally, one of them selects the photo and edits it with their software of choice. When they finish the desired edits, they submit it back to Mendr and the original photographer receives it. Not only does the app hope to reduce the pressure on photographers to always need to edit their own images, but the app is a platform for photo editors to make money.

Inspired by requests from friends and family to edit their own photos, Mendr co-founder (and photographer and editor) came up with the idea for an app that matched photographers and editors. He thought there must be a better way to have someone edit your photos than simply asking people you personally know.

It’s a very cool idea for an application and so far users have been pleased. It currently has high user ratings in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. You can download the app from the links above. To see some of the edits users have done, follow Mendr on Instagram. Have any of you tried the app? If so, let us know in the comments below.

ON1 has announced a major update to ON1 Photo RAW in the form of ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5. The update to the all-in-one photo organizer, editor and RAW processor for macOS and Windows brings numerous new features to the application plus optimization to performance and the overall user experience. The major updates to ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 include the following:

  • Lens Correction: A new Lens Correction pane has been added to ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 and it will automatically detect lenses and apply corrections, including distortion, chromatic aberration and peripheral fall-off corrections.
  • Compare mode: The new compare mode allows you to select up to 15 photos and zoom and pan into each of them simultaneously.
  • Details Pane: A new Details Pane includes improved sharpening and noise reduction functions.
  • Improved search: The search function has been improved with new metadata fields and user control over whether the search will require results to cater to any or all selected search parameters.
  • Clone stamp: The clone stamp retouching tool is now inside the Develop and Effects pane as part of a non-destructive workflow.
  • Stacking presets: You can now stack presets in Effects when using the Insert Preset command.
  • Improved preset management: In addition to the previous improvement, you can now delete and rename preset categories as well as export categories for backing-up or sharing.
  • Lightroom Migration Assistant: In ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5, you can migrate photos, their metadata and collections from Adobe Lightroom to ON1 Photo RAW.
  • New camera support: In ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5, the following cameras are now supported: Apple iPad Pro 9.7, Canon EOS T7i (800D/Kiss X9i), Canon EOS M6, Canon EOS 77D (9000D), Fuji X100F (compressed), Huawei Mate 9, Panasonic LX10, Olympus Pen F, Panasonic ZS70 (TZ90), Pentax KP, Olympus E-PL3, Sony NEX5n and Sony A9.
  • Performance improvements and bug fixes: Other performance upgrades include a reduced memory footprint and increased stability. Numerous user-reported bugs have been fixed as well.

While not specific to ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 but rather to the software overall, it is important to note that the software functions both as standalone software and as a plugin to Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. Further, the app can act as a host to other editing apps. ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 supports online storage services as well, including Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.

While the team is pleased to introduce the new update, they emphasize that they are not done and that users should expect continued improvements to the software. More free updates are scheduled to arrive this summer and ON1 President Craig Keudell says, “We can’t be successful unless we listen to the photography community. Our main goal and something people rarely see from other companies, is the transparency with the way we develop our products. Several features and improvements in this release are the result of feedback from the ON1 community.” Users with ideas should head to the ON1 Photo RAW Project page to submit their own ideas for improvements to the software. The more votes an idea gets, the more likely it is to be included in future development cycles. You can shape the future of ON1 Photo RAW, but only if you contribute ideas and votes.

ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 is available now with an introductory price of just under $100, a $20 savings over its regular price. Previous owners of ON1 Photo or Perfect Photo Suite can upgrade for $80 (regularly $100). For a limited time, ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 comes with training materials including four ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 Master Courses created by professional photographer Matt Kloskowski and ON1 Director of Product Dan Harlacher. Further, ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 comes with activation for up to five computers. You can download a 30-day free trial of the software here. Owners of ON1 Photo RAW 2017 will receive ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 for free.

I have had hands-on time with ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 ahead of its public release and the software has been great so far. You can look forward to my review of ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 soon.

There are many location apps available for photographers on iOS, but one of the best I’ve seen is MapAPic from Sea to Software. The developer recently updated his app and reached out to me with a code to download and try the app for myself. No other compensation was received for the review below.

Basically, MapAPic allows you to instantly save any location using your phone’s GPS functionality and log photos using your phone’s camera and your photo library. Additionally, you can create locations with existing pictures provided that their EXIF data has GPS data. After saving a location, you can make notes about the location and even get sunrise, sunset, golden and blue hour information for any of your saved locations for a selected date.

To help keep your locations organized, you can search your list, view them on a map or utilize a tags system. You can mark your favorite locations accordingly as well. To share information with others, you can email them as PDFs or print locations. Further, your locations can be backed up via Dropbox in the app.

I enjoy the app a lot and it will likely be my go-to app for storing location information. I like that there’s an easy way to keep notes for each location, as I often make notes about places I’ve shot, including considerations for future trips. My only criticism of the app is that I can’t change the map view. I would prefer a satellite map view rather than the standard street view map. For landscape photography, a lot of my locations are not near a street and a satellite view would provide me a better view of my saved locations. Another neat feature would be the ability to share and search through locations. Suppose I am in a new area, it would be great if I could browse stored locations from other users, if they opted to share them publicly.

MapAPic is available in two versions, MapAPic LE and MapAPic. MapAPic LE is free and the full MapAPic version is $4.99. If you’re on the fence, download the free version and try it for yourself.

The built-in camera app on iPhone is fine for many purposes, especially for capturing quick shots. However, it does not offer the user much in the way of control. There are numerous third-party apps which aim to put the photographer in control of their iPhone’s built-in camera in ways the native camera app does not. A new app that fits the bill is Halide by Chroma Noir. The app is developed by Ben Sandofsky and Sebastiaan de With. Sandofsky is a former tech lead on Twitter for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Sebastiaan de With is a former designer for Apple.

I like having my iPhone with me for capturing shots while out and about. I don’t always want to carry my dedicated camera gear and the iPhone does a good job at capturing nice images in many situations. As a photographer, however, I dislike the built-in camera app on iOS because it doesn’t offer me control over my photos. I’m regularly on the hunt for new camera apps and Halide caught my eye last week, so I purchased it and have been experimenting with it.

A RAW image captured by Halide and then processed in Photoshop.

Halide includes numerous cool features including:

  • Intuitive gesture-based user interface
  • Manual focus and focus peaking
  • Manual controls over exposure, ISO and white balance
  • Live histogram
  • RAW image capture
  • Grid overlay and built-in level
  • Intelligent automatic mode

It is worth pointing out that focus peaking, live histogram and RAW capture features require an iPhone 6S, iPhone 7 or iPhone SE. The other features work on iPhone 5 and newer models.

The gesture-based user interface is excellent. The built-in camera app may not be versatile, but it is easy to use, and Halide achieves the same ease of use without removing control. The app is organized well, although you can reorganize buttons at the top if you so desire. Sliding up and down on the display adjusts exposure compensation and sliding down from the top of the screen brings up manual controls. It looks great and works well.

The user interface in Halide is very nice, especially the live histogram and gesture-based controls.

The live histogram works very well, but the focus peaking feature leaves something to be desired. Manual focus itself is fine and works well – although the iPhone’s autofocus works well in most cases, in my experience – but the focus peaking is not sensitive enough to be of much help when manually focusing.

Another issue I have with Halide is that it does not allow full access to your photos, but rather only shows the most recent image added to your phone’s Photos app. It’s annoying to have to leave the app to review multiple photos. For users who want quick filters, such as black and white, there is no option for that within the app.

Ultimately, Halide is a pretty good app with a great user interface and some neat features, but it does feel incomplete in its current state. Nonetheless, it’s a promising app and there’s a lot here to like. Halide is available now for $2.99, although the price will be increasing shortly.

The highly-popular social media app, Instagram, has been updated with two new features. The first of the additions is live streaming. It’s very simple to start live streaming from your phone as you only tap the start live video button in the camera menu and then you are good to go. When live streaming video, the feed can be shared for up to an hour after which the stream is then gone forever. You can tell when someone is streaming because the word “Live” will be underneath their Instagram Stories profile picture at the top of the screen.

The second addition is to the Instagram Direct messaging service within the app. Much like the popular Snapchat application, users will now be able to send their friends images that automatically delete when read. Also like Snapchat, Instagram will notify users if someone replayed or took a screen capture of the disappearing message that was read. As Fstoppers notes in their coverage of this, Instagram Direct has become a very popular aspect of Instagram with over 300 million users taking advantage of the feature every month.

Instagram Direct messaging has been enhanced with the addition of Snapchat-style disappearing messages

You may recall us briefly covering Polaroid Swing back in July, but the app has taken off since being recently featured in Apple’s App Store and it is worth bringing attention to again. Polaroid Swing allows users to capture micro videos, one second clips which appear as still images, but can be manipulated to show the captured video clip by swiping on the image or tilting your phone. If you haven’t checked the app out before, now is as good a time as any. Polaroid Swing is available for free on iOS and an Android version is in the works.

Are you tired of dealing with occasionally clunky and often limited smartphone apps to remote control your camera with your mobile device? MIOPS has just the product for you with the MIOPS Mobile. Launched on Kickstarter earlier this year, the camera remote has nearly doubled its Kickstarter target with 18 days to go in the campaign.

MIOPS Mobile connects to your camera’s shutter release port and is controlled by your phone via Bluetooth. From your smartphone, you can utilize creative trigger modes including vibration, sound, motion and distance. If you’re thinking this product would be great for timelapses, you can remotely shoot those as well.

If you’re feeling adventurous and creative, you can utilize a very distinct “Scenario” mode. In this mode you can combine all of the trigger release modes found in the MIOPS Mobile and schedule them for any desired time. The device will take care of the rest and execute your programmed steps.

Equipped with a variety of sensors, MIOPS Mobile can detect motion (such as sports or wildlife), vibrations (which leverages your phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope) and sound (via an onboard microphone). If you want to control the shutter release, there are six available cable release modes including press and lock, press and hold and timed release, the latter of which should work very well for star trail photography.

MIOPS Mobile uses efficient Bluetooth 4.0 technology and the required companion app will be available for free for Android and iOS devices. There are cables available to support over 350 camera models. You can check the full list of compatible cameras here.

If you want MIOPS Mobile, you can get a MIOPS Mobile remote for just under $80 with April 2017 delivery. For $30 more, you can get the remote plus the mobile dongle and flash adapter. If you really can’t wait that long, you can get all of the above in March for $300. See Kickstarter for the full list of backing options.
