The DxO ONEÂ camera has been exclusively for iOS photographers since it launched in 2015. The 20-megapixel camera you can attach to your phone is now coming to Android as a USB-C version.

DxO is launching the Android version of the ONE via a new early access program. For $499, you receive an early DxO ONE for Android, an outdoor shell and DxO PhotoLab software. Now, as it is an early access program, the DxO ONE for Android doesn’t currently have all the features that the iOS version has, but DxO will be releasing regular updates to bring it up to speed with the iOS version. Some of the upcoming updates include time-lapse functionality and Facebook Live compatibility.

Android is not the same uniform ecosystem as iOS, so your Android device may not be compatible. The Verge states that the currently supported Android smartphones are the HTC U11, Huawei Mate 9, Huawei P10, LG G9 and G V20, Moto Z, Nexus 5X, Nokia 8, Nubia Z11 mini, Samsung Galaxy A5, Samsung Note 8, Samsung S8 and Huawei Honor 9. Other phones may work, but DxO cannot guarantee optimal performance.

With Apple’s newest flagship iPhone, the iPhone X, a little over a month away, the title might not last long. Nonetheless, at least for now, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have taken over the top two sports on DxO Mark Mobile’s best smartphone camera list.

The new 12-megapixel dual cameras in the iPhone 8 Plus come equipped with wide and telephoto lenses with f/1.8 and f/2.8 optics respectively. They also come with a new “portrait lighting” feature, which is currently in beta, but does look quite intriguing thus far. The iPhone 8 Plus scored a 94, which bests the regular iPhone 8 by two points and the previous champions, the Google Pixel and HTC U11 by four points. On the video side of the equation, the iPhone 8 Plus is actually bested by the Pixel, but remains right near the top of the list.

It is not just imaging performance which has improved dramatically with the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus phones either. 9to5Mac is reporting that the new line of iPhones has a processor on par, at least in terms of peak performance, with a MacBook Pro. Tom’s Guide showed that the iPhone 8 was faster than a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Core i5 processor. In fact, the iPhone 8 is the fastest phone currently available…by a lot.

It will be very interesting to see how the new $1,000 iPhone X does during testing. Early reports suggest that the new phone will be very hard to come by when it launches in early November.

NASA is going eclipse chasing in jets – DIY Photography

On August 21, there will be two and a half minutes of total solar eclipse. It’ll be a rare viewing opportunity for many on the ground, but NASA wants to see it from the air in WB-57F jet planes. The pair of research jets are seeking to capture certain waves which will not be visible from the ground and capture the “clearest images of the Sun’s outer atmosphere – the corona – to date and the first-ever thermal images of Mercury, revealing how temperature varies across the planet’s surface.”

As you can see in the images above and additional images here, the shutter speeds are quite slow. Unsurprisingly the small flash isn’t producing a lot of power, but they should still prove sufficient for still life and studio work. For outdoor portraits, however, they might come up short.

Adobe has updated Lightroom Mobile for both iOS and Android. The updates have differing new features, so let’s look at them each separately.

On the iOS front, Lightroom Mobile has a new selective brush, which is one of the most requested new features. When using an iPhone that supports 3D Touch, you can vary the effect of the brush by pressing with different levels of pressure. The same is true when working with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. There is also a new ability to selectively erase linear and radial gradients, improving their usability during selective edits.

Further additions include a “Details” tab, which provides global control over sharpening and noise reduction. There’s an improved iPad interface for LR Mobile, which is designed to offer a more desktop-like appearance and functionality while still taking advantage of the large touch-based interface of an iPad. There is also a new “Details” tab for control over global adjustments like sharpness and noise reduction.

Android users have a big update to enjoy as well. The entire experience has been redesigned from the ground up to be faster and more familiar for Android users. The iPhone is deservedly a popular phone, offering an easy-to-use operating system and many great features. However, as someone who has been using an iPhone since the original launched, I understand why many users opt for Android phones. They offer more control and access to users and come in at a variety of price points and form factors. If you want as much choice as possible, Android is the way to go. Android users now have a new choice in the form of the Essential Phone.

Somewhat silly name aside, this new phone comes to us from the person who created Android itself, Andy Rubin. First, the basics. The Essential Phone costs just under US$700 with top-end specifications and comes with an edge-to-edge display, with a cutout for the front-facing camera. Save for the camera cutout and a slightly thicker bezel at the bottom, basically the front of the Essential Phone is just one giant display. Specifically, the display is 5.71 inches diagonally and offers 2560 x 1312 resolution. There is plenty of power behind that big screen too. The Essential Phone has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage to go with its Qualcomm 835 processor.

What about the camera features of this new Android phone? The built-in camera is the world’s thinnest dual camera system in a phone, per the official site. It uses color and monochrome sensors to capture “up to 200 percent more light than traditional phone cameras.” It’s not clear which phone cameras count as traditional, but the team has clearly put an emphasis on low light performance. The autofocus system has been optimized as well, offering “better focus with depth tracking.” The rear cameras include 13-megapixel Dual RGB + Mono cameras with “image fusion technology.” The lenses are f/1.85 aperture and the focal lengths are not yet specified. 4K video can be recorded up to 30 frames per second and Full HD (1080p) video can be recorded at up to 120fps. The front-facing camera is 8 megapixels and can record 4K video. You can read more about the camera technology here.

A particularly interesting feature of the Essential Phone is that it can accept magnetic accessories, which can communicate wirelessly with the phone while attached. One of the accessories will be a 360-degree camera, “the world’s smallest 360° personal camera.” The 360° camera accessory uses dual 12-megapixel fisheye cameras with f/1.8 apertures. Each camera has a 210° field of view and the camera can record 360° UHD video at up to 30fps. The 360° camera will retail for $200, but it can be reserved now for $50 with the purchase of the Essential Phone.

Billed by numerous media outlets as the anti-iPhone, the Essential Phone does mark a stark contrast to Apple’s popular device – although they both annoyingly lack headphone jacks – but it remains to be seen how much market there is to be captured. Chinese-Malaysian photographer CY Wong recently did a promotional shoot for Huawei and their new P10 phone which is coengineered with Leica. You can read our coverage of the first Huawei/Leica collaboration, the P9, here. The P10 puts a focus on its imaging capabilities, with its marketing materials claiming to “redefine modern portraiture.” Its rear “Leica Dual Camera 2.0” includes two Summarit-H lenses with fast f/2.2 apertures and a pair of 20- and 12-megapixel sensors.

The result of the impressive specs and Leica pedigree appears to be a very capable camera, as you can see in the videos below.
