The Nikon ZR is already one of the most capable hybrid cameras on the market, offering a wide range of recording options including REDCODE RAW 12-bit, ProRes RAW 12-bit, ProRes 422 HQ 4:2:2 10-bit, H.265 4:2:0 8/10-bit, and H.264 4:2:0 8-bit. However, Nikon isn’t stopping there — the company plans to expand the camera’s capabilities even further in a future firmware update.

Apple ProRes 422 LT Support Coming Soon

According to Nikon Rumors, the upcoming firmware update for the ZR will add support for Apple ProRes 422 LT, a professional video codec known for its balance between image quality and file size efficiency.

Compared to the standard ProRes 422, the LT version reduces file sizes by around 30% while maintaining solid editing performance and image fidelity. For example, recording 4K DCI at 24p using ProRes 422 LT consumes approximately 148GB per hour, whereas ProRes 422 HQ requires roughly 318GB for the same duration.

This addition was initially mentioned during the Nikon ZR launch, but the company has yet to specify when the feature will officially arrive.

Why ProRes 422 LT Matters

Adding support for ProRes 422 LT will be especially useful for filmmakers and content creators who prefer efficient post-production workflows. The codec is less processor-intensive than H.265, and Apple devices natively support ProRes, making footage easier to edit and preview without additional software.

This move could also encourage tighter integration between Nikon and Apple ecosystems — particularly for filmmakers who use iPhones as B-cameras, ensuring uniform color profiles and codec compatibility across setups.

Firmware Update Timeline

Nikon has not yet announced a release date for the ProRes 422 LT update, but expectations are high that it could arrive in the next major firmware rollout. If you are planning to get the Nikon ZR, it is already in stock at major retailers, including B&H, and is listed for $2,196.95.

We’ll continue to monitor Nikon’s announcements and provide updates as soon as the new codec becomes available.
